The controls scope depends on the equipment: its operating sequence, operator interaction and the systems it needs to connect to. For an existing machine, the installed hardware and available software are important starting points.
New equipment and existing systems
A new machine allows the controls to be developed with the mechanical and electrical design. An upgrade starts with understanding the existing sequence and the change that production needs.
HMI development forms part of that work, providing the operator interface to the machine. Integration connects the software, wiring and equipment before on-site commissioning.
Information for a controls brief
For an existing installation, share the PLC and HMI make and model, a description of the issue or proposed change, and any available drawings or program backups. Include the connected equipment and the access or downtime constraints.
For a new machine, an outline of the operating sequence and operator tasks helps establish the controls requirements. The detailed scope can then be agreed with the mechanical and electrical work.
